Ward Hubbell traces his interest in politics and the media back to days when he would sit on his dad’s lap and watch the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite. He always imagined a day when he would leave that small town in Mississippi to go where the action was — New York or maybe D.C. He loved the big city, the bright lights and the energy of business and politics.

By the time he entered college, he discovered another passion — the study of human behavior. Because his dad was a psychologist, a bachelor’s in psychology and eventually a master’s degree seemed to make sense. But after six years and two degrees, he had the unpleasant epiphany that his education led to three possible career paths: becoming a therapist, a researcher or an academician — all of which sounded pretty awful.

So, he packed up his Chevrolet Impala, left Wake Forest University and drove to Washington, D.C. where he looked up a fellow Mississippian — who fortunately happened to be the White House press secretary — and without realizing it began to invent a career that would blend his fascination of politics and the media, with his interest in influencing how people think about the issues of the day.

After 20 years of working as a communications strategist, media spokesperson, and lobbyist, Ward Hubbell founded Hubbell Communications in 2003 and the rest, as they say, is history.

Today, Hubbell Communications is Oregon’s premier public affairs and public relations firm. Headquartered in Portland, Oregon, Hubbell Communications develops and executes strategies for organizations across the country. The firm’s client list ranges from small, entrepreneurial companies to some of the most influential businesses in the country.
